CROSS COUNTRY 2011

TAILRACE   2/4/2011

State cross country representative Charles Gunn took out the opening race of the cross country season conducted by the Newstead Harrier Club at Tailrace Park on Saturday.

Gunn won the 5km, held on grass and trail, with a time of 17:11, from promising junior Getasew Ferguson.  Third placed Paul McShane smashed last year’s race time by over  four minutes.   Fastest female was Alice Holmes in 23:27.

Orienteer Oscar Phillips won the 3km in 9:45 from Adrian Tew, with Jessica Walsh third and fastest female.

Jayde Petterwood won the 1.5km in 5:47 from fastest female Arabella Phillips (5:57) with Tayela Petterwood third.

CARR VILLA TRAIL 9/4/2011

Barbara-Anne O’Byrne won the Newstead Harrier Club’s  6.1km Carr Villa Trail handicap event on  Saturday and also recorded fastest female time of 30:31.  O’Byrne held out Neil McClarron and Robert Gunn who were separated by just two seconds.  Fastest male was the much improved Paul McShane in 28:11.

The 3.1km lap of the trail was won by Ben McShane  ahead of fastest female Arabella Phillips (14:10) and Skye Baker.  Fastest male was Getasew Ferguson with 11:19.   

Jayde Petterwood was first on handicap and fastest male in the 1.5km, second was Tom McShane and third was fastest female Demi Petterwood.

WINDERMERE 16/4/2011

Young runners filled the first three places in the Newstead  Harrier Club’s 9.4km cross country race at Windermere on Saturday.

Junior James Baker won the challenging handicap event on road, gravel and sandy track from fastest male Oscar Phillips (33:03) and Taylor O’Byrne, whose mum Barbara-Anne recorded fastest female time.

Adrian Tew won the 4km in 21:23 from fastest male Getasew Ferguson (14:19) and Jessica Walsh. Fastest female was Skye Baker in 19:19.

Arabella Phillips was first and fastest in the 2km in 7:59, with Orysia Petterwood and Alice Fullerton the placegetters.

HERITAGE FOREST 30/4/2011

Junior state cross country representative Skye Baker won the Newstead Harrier Club's 5km sealed handicap held at Heritage Forest on Saturday from Gary Armstrong and James Baker. 
Fastest male was Charles Gunn in 18:13 and fastest female Alice Holmes with 24:29.
The 1.5km handicap was won by fastest female Kate Maloney in 8:01 from fastest male Tom McShane (6:48) with Demi Petterwood third.

PAPER BEACH 7/5/2011

Barbara Clayton enjoyed an easy victory in the Newstead Harrier Club’s 8km cross country and road event at Paper Beach on Saturday.  The club handicapper will have to review her own mark after a dominating win in a time of 45:58, finishing one and a half minutes clear of Gary Armstrong and Craig Barron.  Fastest male was Robert Lee in 34:42 and fastest female Barbara-Anne O‘Byrne in 36:49.

The 4km was won by Skye Baker in the fastest female time of 18:52 from fastest male Jayde Petterwood (16:50) and Jessica Walsh.

Arabella Phillips was first and fastest in the 2km trail race in 8:09 from Fiona Taylor and Kate Maloney.  Fastest male was Tom McShane in 9:41.

COUNTRY CLUB TASMANIA NORTHERN ALL SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Waverley Primary School 14th May, 2011

Perfect running conditions saw two records fall at the Country Club Tasmania Northern All Schools Cross Country Championships at Waverley Primary School yesterday.

State cross country representative Getasew Ferguson of Star of the Sea College broke the Under 13 boys 2km record held jointly by two of the state’s best junior athletes in Clinton Pentland and Oscar Phillips.  Triathlete Pentland set the record of 7:20 in 1994, it was equalled by multiple national orienteering representative Oscar Phillips in 2003 before being broken by Ferguson with an excellent time of 7:05.

Second placed Oliver Marshall of Scotch and third placed Kaleb Canning Hagley were separated by just five seconds.

Norwood Primary School’s Arabella Phillips, 9, took twelve seconds off the U11 girls 2km record with a time of 8:17.  Second was Riverside’s Georgie Williams and third Amy Halaby of Scotch Oakburn.

The girls Under 13 2km race was won in fine style by Scotch’s Laura McShane in a time of 8:24 from Hagley’s Skye Baker and Scotch’s Gabby Hoffman.

Hagley’s Adam Burr won the Under 11 boys 2km in 8:49 from Nathan Cairns of Sacred Heart and Yven Cole of Deloraine whose family won a total of five medals at the carnival.

Alina Cole (Deloraine) was first in the Under 9 girl’s 1km in 5:00 from Brielle Moore (Hagley) and Georgie Watson (Scotch).

Mikayla Cole (Latrobe High) won the Secondary girls 3km in 13:03 from Scotch’s Alice Holmes and Aliera Cole (Latrobe) and Keilan Cole  placed second in the Under 7 boys 1km behind Riverside’s Rylei Pattie, with Scotch’s Noah Wallis third.   Perth Primary’s Erica Kirk won the Under 7 girls 1km from Demi Petterwood of St Thomas More’s.

St Patrick’s College’s Thomas Baker recorded 12:24 to hold out team mate Jayde Petterwood by nine seconds in the Secondary School boys event, with Scotch’s Chris Taylor third.

Scotch Oakburn made a clean sweep of the Under 9 boys 1km with Lawson Archer winning in 4:27 from Thomas Hann and Oli Gibson.

The Open mens 5km was won by Paul McShane from Mick Halaby and Craig Barron and the womens event by Barbara-Anne O’Byrne, with Barbara Clayton and Alice Fullerton the placegetters.

BLACKSTONE 21/5/2011

New runner Emma Wells won the Newstead Harrier Club’s 6km road race at Blackstone Heights on Saturday.  Wells completed the hilly course in 29:50 with place getters Garth Gregory and Christine Rogers separated by ten seconds.  Rogers was narrowly fastest female with 29:46 and young gun Getasew Ferguson fastest male in 21:14.

Ben McShane was first and fastest in the 4km in 15:58 from fastest female Tayela Petterwood (18:35), with Kaleb Canning third.

Fiona Taylor won the 2km from fastest male Nathan Cairns (8:42) and Tom McShane.  Fastest was Georgie Williams in a quick 7:52.

GRINDELWALD 28/5/2011

Round 2 of the Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series was conducted by the Newstead Harrier Club at Grindelwald on Saturday, with perfect conditions attracting strong fields.

Norwood Primary’s Arabella Phillips followed the previous day’s win at the LSSSA cross country carnival with a win in the 1.5km primary girls race, in a fast time of 5:44.  Second place went to Amy Halaby of Scotch Oakburn and third to Georgie Williams of Riverside Primary.

Getasew Ferguson of Star of the Sea College won the primary boys 1.5km in 5:13 from Scotch Oakburn team mates Oliver Marshall and Nick Taylor.

Ferguson then backed up for a second run, taking the win in in the secondary boys 3km in 11:03 ahead of Jayde Petterwood of St Patrick’s College and Scotch’s Chris Taylor, while Alice Holmes of Scotch won the secondary girls race in 13:34 from Tayela Petterwood (LCGS) and Jessica Walsh (SPC).

Veteran front marker Garth Gregory worked hard for his first win of the season in the Open 6km handicap, just managing to hold out former national junior medallist Hayden Butt in his first race for some years, and the improving Barbara Clayton.

Paul McShane was fastest male and Barbara–Anne O’Byrne was fastest female.

BEECHFORD 4/6/2011 

In only his second race with the club, Dominic Williams won the Newstead Harrier Club’s Beechford cross country organised by the Ferguson family on Saturday.

Williams completed the 6km course on sandy beachside trails in a time of 32:36 to take the win ahead of junior Nick Taylor and Paul McShane.  Backmarker Oscar Phillips was fastest male in 22:00 and Barbara-Anne O’Byrne fastest female in 28:21.

The 3km handicap saw the top six separated by less than twenty seconds, with Ben McShane taking a narrow win ahead of Jessica Walsh and Tayela Petterwood.  Getasew Ferguson was fastest male with a time of 10:44 and Alice Holmes fastest female in 13:54.

Frontmarker Orysia Petterwood won the 1.5km by three seconds from  Allison Maloney with fastest female Georgie Williams third in 6:15.  

HERITAGE FOREST 18/6/2011


Gary Armstrong was an easy winner of the Newstead Harrier Club's 6km cross country sealed handicap at Heritage Forest on Saturday, while place getters Dominic Williams and Craig Barron were seperated by just five seconds.  Fastest time was recorded by Paul McShane.  The event was held in conjunction with Round 3 of the Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series.  

The Primary girls 1.5km was won by Arabella Phillips (Norwood Primary)  from Georgie Williams (Riverside Primary) and Amy Halaby (Scotch Oakburn) and the boys 1.5km by Getasew Ferguson (Star of the Sea) with Oliver Marshall (Scotch) second and Ben McShane (Hagley) third.

Secondary school winners were Thomas Baker (St Patrick's College) and Tayela Petterwood (Launceston Church Grammar).  

ROSEVALE - Stokells 25/6/2011

Round 4 of the series was held at the Stokell Property at Rosevale and saw further wins to Ferguson who took out both the Primary boys 1.5km and the secondary 3km on challenging courses at the Stokell property at Rosevale.
Arabella Phillips remained undefeated in the Primary girls series and Alice Holmes (Scotch Oakburn) won the secondary girls event.

 LOW HEAD 2/7/2011  
 
Junior Getasew Ferguson won the Newstead Harrier Club's Gunn family Low Head 8km handicap on a hilly cross country course on Saturday.  Ferguson also recorded the fastest time of 31:18 ahead of his senior opposition.  Placegetters were the consistent Paul McShane and Dominic Williams.  Barbara Clayton was fastest female.
Skye Baker was first and fastest in the 4km handicap in a time of 18:53 ahead of Alice Fullerton and Jessica Walsh.  Tanya Kirk won the 2km from Tom McShane and Kate Maloney with fastest time recorded by Arabella Phillips.

ROSEVALE - Claytons 9/7/2011

The Newstead Harrier Club event at the Clayton property at Rosevale on Saturday saw Dominic Williams record his second win, completing the tough 8km course in 46:07.  Williams has rarely been out of the placings since taking up racing this season and has now scored two wins, two seconds and a third.  Second was Paul McShane and third, fastest female Barbara Clayton. Robert Lee was fastest female.
Getasew Ferguson was first and fastest in the 4km handicap in 15:57 from fastest female Skye Baker with Adrian Tew third.  First in the 2km was Ben McShane  (FM) from Georgie Williams (FF)and Tom McShane.

STEPHENSDALE 16/7/2011

Tasmanian Primary School cross country champions won round 5 of the Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series at Stephensdale on Saturday.  Scotch Oakburn's Oliver Marshall won the primary boys 1.5km from Nick Taylor (Scotch) and Ben McShane (Hagley) and Arabella Phillips (Norwood) won the primary girls 1.5km ahead of Scotch's Amy Halaby and Riverside's Georgie Williams.
Secondary 3km division winners were Chris Taylor and Alice Holmes, both of Scotch Oakburn.    
The Open 6km sealed handicap was won by Barbara Clayton, with Rick Fontyn second and Paul McShane third.  Fastest time was recorded by Simon Phillips.

DIDDLEUM 23/7/2011

Craig Barron broke through for his first win of the season in the Kings Meadows Podiatry 9km cross country race organised by the McClenaghan family at Diddleum on Saturday.  Barron, who has rocketed to the top of the consistency points scored an easy win ahead of junior James Baker who won over a similar distance earlier in the season.  Paul McShane rounded out the placings and fastest times were recorded by Robbie Lee and Barbara Clayton.
It was a profitable day out for the Petterwood family, with Jayde Petterwood winning the 4km from Tayela Petterwood and Jessica Walsh and Demi Petterwood and Orysia Petterwood filling the placings behind new runner Fiona Roark in the 1.8km. 

QUEECHY 6/8/2011

Scotch Oakburn continued their success in the Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series, taking out the major perpetual shields at Queechy High on Saturday.
Scotch was the top scoring primary school in the Newstead Harrier Club conducted competition, but faced a strong challenge from Hagley Farm Primary School which finished a very close second.  St Patrick's College was announced as the highest scoring secondary School.   
Hagley's Adam Burr scored full points in the U11 boys age group ahead of team mates Tom McShane and Kobe Moore while Norwood's Arabella Phillips (U11 girls) was undefeated in the all-ages primary girls competition.  Series placegetters were Scotch's Amy Halaby and Riverside's Georgie Williams.
Skye Baker (Hagley) won the U13 primary girls division from Caoilainn O'Loughlin (Scotch) and Kiara Moore (Hagley) while the boys U13 series went to Oliver Marshall (Scotch) from Getasew Ferguson (Star of the Sea) and Hagley's Ben McShane.
Also taking series wins were Hagley's John Cummins (U9 boys) from Scotch's Jack Nicholls and Lawson Archer, Briella Moore, Hagley  (U9 girls) from Kelly Gowans (Hagley) and Charlotte Fontyn (Scotch),  Grammar's Tayela Petterwood (Secondary girls) from Alice Holmes (Scotch) and Hannah Cummins (St Patrick's) and Scotch's Chris Taylor (Secondary boys) from Thomas Baker and Jayde Petterwood (both St Pat's) .
The winning primary team was Hagley Vipers (Breanna Stokell, William Reeve, Kate Maloney, Hayley Older and Tom McShane) from Hagley Chargers (Danielle O'Kane, Ben McShane, Skye Baker, Kobe Moore  and Adam Burr) and Scotch Band of Brothers (Bede Archer, James Marshall, Ben Marshall, Lawson Archer and Oliver Marshall).  Secondary team winners were St Patrick's College (James Baker, Jessica Walsh, Hannah Cummins, Jayde Petterwood and Thomas Baker).
In Saturday's final round at Queechy, Getasew Ferguson won the primary boys 1.5km from Oliver Marshall and Ben McShane and also the secondary boys 3km from James Baker and Chris Taylor, Arabella Phillips won the primary girls race from Georgie Williams and Amy Halaby and Skye Baker stepped up to win the secondary girls 3km from Tayela Petterwood and Hannah Cummins.
The Open 10km road handicap was won by Steve Elton from junior Nick Taylor, with Neil McLarron third.  Fastest times were recorded by Paul McShane and Christine Rogers.   Club sealed handicaps  conducted on the 1.5km and 3km saw female domination with Demi Petterwood taking the 1.5km from Kate Maloney and Orysia Petterwood and Fiona Roark winning the 3km from Alice Fullerton and Allison Maloney.  

HOLLYBANK 13/8/2011

Juniors led the way in the Newstead Harrier Club's Hollybank 6km on Saturday, with youngster Nick Taylor winning in a time of 31:27 from James Baker, with the season's big improver Paul McShane third.  Fastest time was recorded by another talented junior, Getasew Ferguson with 23:27.  Fastest female was Barbara Clayton in 37:23.

Frontmarker Alice Fullerton won the 3km in 20:34 from promising youngsters Kate Maloney and Montana McKenzie.  Fastest male time was closely contested with Chris Taylor recording 13:11 to Ben McShane's 13:16.  Fastest overall was Arabella Phillips with 13:02.

Allison Maloney won the 1.5km handicap in 8:09 from Kate Maloney and Orysia Petterwood. Georgie Williams was fastest overall in 6:33 with Tom McShane fastest male with 6:41.

Presentations were made to club members Getasew Ferguson, Arabella Phillips, Georgie Williams, Amy Halaby, Skye Baker and James Baker who will represent Tasmania at the National Cross Country Championships in Canberra next weekend. 

PUNCHBOWL 27/8/2011

New club member Rick Fontyn scored his first win in Saturday's Newstead Harrier Club 5km sealed handicap at Punchbowl.  Fontyn finished in a time of 26:36 for the hilly course to hold out junior Nick Taylor, with Neil McLaren third.  Newly crowned Australian cross country champion Getasew Ferguson recorded fastest time.

Fastest female Tayela Petterwood also had her first win of the season in the 2.5km ahead of the consistent Jessica Walsh and Adrian Tew.  Fastest male was Ben McShane.

Georgie Williams also enjoyed her first handicap win in the 1.5km from leading point scorer Demi Petterwood and Montana McKenzie.  Fastest male was Tom McShane and fastest female Arabella Phillips. 

MT BARROW 10/9/2011

Robert "The General" Lee continued his fine record of success at the Newstead Harrier Club's 47th annual Ewan Scott Memorial 14km race at Mt Barrow on Saturday.  Lee, who has struggled with injury this year, had a greatly reduced preparation for this event but was still able to win it for the 12th time since his first victory in 1988.  
Simon Phillips finished in second place and primary school youngster Nick Taylor impressed with his tenacity in making the gruelling journey to the summit to finish third.
Adrian Tew won the 10km supporting event from Craig Barron and Gerard Little. 
Fastest female in the 4.5km, Tayela Petterwood had her second handicap win in succession with Montana McKenzie second and fastest male Getasew Ferguson third.
Tom McShane  broke through for his first win of the season and was also fastest male, with Arabella Phillips second and fastest female and Demi Petterwood third.
Four Newstead Harrier juniors were recognised for their selection in the state team to compete at the national track and field championships for children 12 years and under.  Arabella Phillips, Amy Halaby, Georgie Williams and Getasew Ferguson will travel to the titles in Darwin this week. 
 

 
CLARENDON  17/09/2011
Garth Gregory scored his second win of the season in the Newstead Harrier Club's 8km road handicap at Clarendon on Saturday.  Veteran Gregory held out first time youngster Ben Kingsley, with Craig Barron third.  Fastest time was recorded by Paul McShane. 
The 4km saw fastest  male James Baker rack up another win ahead of fastest female Tayela Petterwood with Ben McShane third.
Kate McShane showed improved form to win the 2km handicap from fastest female Montana McKenzie and Fiona Taylor.  Fastest male was Tom McShane.

HOLLYBANK FUN DAY

Australian ultra marathon representative Simon Phillips won the Newstead Harrier Club's final cross country event of the season at Hollybank on Saturday.
Phillips has run infrequently this season due to injury but managed to catch placegetters Nick Taylor and Paul McShane in the closing stages of the race to win by twenty seconds and also record fastest time for the 6km course.
Jessica Walsh ran strongly on the undulating course to win the 3km from fastest male Ben McShane with Montana McKenzie third. Fastest female was Tayela Petterwood.
Demi and Orysia Petterwood continued their string of success to place first and second in the 1.5km with Erica Kirk third.  Fastest male was Tom McShane and fastest female Arabella Phillips.
The mixed relay was won by the team of Erica Kirk, Nick Taylor, Montana McKenzie and Arabella Phillips.
