HERITAGE 10/4/2010

Brothers Josh and Brodie Stokell were the winners in the opening round of the Newstead Harrier Club's cross country season at Heritage Forest. 

Josh Stokell won the 4.4km in 15:25 from Ken McLean and Damien Appleby.

The 2.2km was won by Brodie Stokell in 7:32 from Ben McShane and Emma McClenaghan.

A free barbecue was enjoyed after the events.

BLACKSTONE 17/4/2010

Robbie Lee won the hilly 6km event at Blackstone Heights in 24:18 from Malcolm Hales and Barbara-Anne O'Byrne.

The 4km was won by Getasew Ferguson in a quick 14:45 from Fergus Poynter and Kidist Ferguson.

First in the 2km was Sam Lee in 7:57 from Ben McShane and Arabella Phillips.  Thank you to Barbara-Anne O'Byrne for organising and sponsoring the event and of course for the scones!

WINDERMERE 24/4/2010

The Gunn family made a clean sweep of the placings at Saturday's Newstead Harrier Club event held in very windy conditions at Windermere.

Robert Gunn overcame last year's injuries to slice almost two minutes off his 2009 time in the 9.4km, crossing the line first in 42:20.  Second was fastest female Vicky Gunn in 40:21 and third was fastest male Charles Gunn in 33:24.

State throws representative Claire McClenaghan swapped her javelin for joggers to take out the 4km in 21:57.  Fastest male Fergus Poynter was second in 16:08 and fastest female Tayela Petterwood third in 19:08.

Ben McShane placed first and fastest in the 2km from his brother Tom, with Skye Baker third.  Ben's winning time was 8:08.  Fastest female was Arabella Phillips in 8:41.

GRINDELWALD 1/5/2010

Talented young Beechford runner Getasew Ferguson of Star of the Sea won both the 1.5km and 3km events at round 1 of the Newstead Harrier Club's Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series at Grindelwald on Saturday.
Ferguson, 11, raced his own age primary school event, but prefers the longer distances, so doubled up to also take out the secondary division in 11:55. His winning 1.5km time was 5.33. Placegetters in the boy's race were Hagley pair Thomas Baker and Ben McShane.
Hagley was also successful in the girl's 1.5km event, with Skye Baker winning in 6:23 from Scotch's Amy Halaby and Hagley's Jessica Schnoor.
Riverside High's Courtney Cook ran strongly to win the girl's 3km in 12:18 from Grammar's Tayela Petterwood and Kidist Ferguson (Star of the Sea). 
Children signing up for the series will receive a registration pack including a bag and drink bottle. 
The Open 6km handicap was won by Steve Elton from Paul McShane and fastest male Oscar Phillips.  Fastest female was Barbara Clayton.

NORTHERN ALL SCHOOLS  CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS  9/5/2010
 
The 17th annual Northern All Schools Cross Country Championships at Waverley Primary School yesterday saw some close contests, but windy conditions and wet grounds ensured the race records were safe for another year.
Hagley's Tom McShane won the U9 boy's 1km in 4:28, just one second ahead of Deloraine's Yven Cole, with Sacred Heart's Nathan Cairns a close third. Deloraine's Cole family enjoyed a successful day with four family members taking home medals.
Mikayla Cole won the U13 girl's 2km in a time of 8:12 from Scotch Oakburn's Jessica Field and Laura McShane, Elina Cole won the U7 girl's 1km in 5:25 from Demi Petterwood of St Thomas More's and Kielan Cole claimed the bronze in the U7 boys 1km. 
In winning the U7 boy's race, Waverley Primary's Ryan Anderson was the closest of all competitors to the race records, missing the time by 11 seconds with 4:57. Second was Scotch's Malachi Wallis.
Hagley's Kaleb Canning won the U11 boy's 2km in 7:55, 9 seconds ahead of Oliver Marshall from Scotch, with Trevallyn's Morgan Lockwood third.  The girl's U11 2km event was won for the second year in a row by Hagley's Skye Baker in a good time of 8:46, closely followed home by Scotch's Amy Halaby and Norwood's Arabella Phillips.  
Hagley scored another victory in the U9 girl's event, with Kate Harris first in 5:29, from Eleanor White of Scotch and Grace Gillow of Youngtown.
Jayde Petterwood of Launceston Church Grammar won the U13 boy's 2km from Hagley's Dylan Johnson and Mowbray's Corey Stanley.
In the secondary school competiton Grammar's Tayela Petterwood held on to win the U15 girl's 3km by two seconds from a fast finishing Courtney Stanley, Prospect's Josh McDonald won the U15 boy's 4km from Queechy's Ben Millington and in the Open event Scotch's Tom Goddard continued his all-round sporting success with a win in the 8km in 31:32.    

PUNCHBOWL 8/5/2010

Backmarker Oscar Phillips was first and fastest in the Newstead Harrier Club's hilly cross country event at Punchbowl on Saturday ahead of  Barbara-Anne O'Byrne and Barbara Clayton.
Phillips recorded a good time of 19:55 for the challenging course with Ken McLean second fastest. O'Byrne was fastest female in 27:03 with  Liz Bayles showing great improvement to finish with second fastest women's time.
Alice Fullerton won the 1.5km from fastest male Fergus Poynter (5:59) and Jayde Petterwood.  Fastest female was Alice Holmes.

LOW HEAD 15/5/2010

Barbara Clayton won Saturday's challenging 8km cross country race organised by the Gunn family at Low Head.  Clayton started out her cross country career running the short courses with her children. Placegetters were Alex McLean and Barbara-Anne O'Byrne.  Fastest male was Charles Gunn (30:17) and fastest female Vicky Gunn (35:49).
Fergus Poynter was first and fastest in the 4km with a time of 16:15, from fastest female Alice Holmes (18:21) and James Baker. 
Jessica Walsh won her first race for the season in the 2km, from fastest female Skye Baker (9:09) and Eleanor McLean.  Fastest male was Warwick McLean in 10:50.

AWARDS BBQ
The Newstead Harrier Club presented their annual awards for cross country and track and field at a barbecue at Punchbowl Reserve recently.  Major presentations included the club's Athlete of the Year Awards which went to Todd Hodgetts (senior), Sarah Guest (U18) and Claire McClenaghan (U15). Hodgetts placed 2nd U23 and 5th Open in the national senior shot championship, and both Guest and McClenaghan represented the state and broke northern records. The club's Throws Champions Awards (for combined performances over all four throws) were Kyle Bean and Sarah Guest. The Vic Harris Distance Award was won by Oscar Phillips who won a national bronze medal at the Australian Mountain running championships and represented Australia in mountain running in Italy. The Paddy Smith point score awards for track and field were won by Kyle Bean, Brodie Steer and Claire McClenaghan and for the cross country season Barbara-Anne O'Byrne (Div1), Heather Richards (Div 2) and Arabella Phillips (Div 3). 
  
 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

     

 

 

 

 

PAPER BEACH 22/5/2010

Junior runner Alex McLean won the Newstead Harrier Club's 8km cross country event held in perfect weather conditions on a scenic course at Paper Beach on Saturday.  In only his second attempt at the distance McLean finished in a time of 37:53 to record a comfortable win ahead of Barbara-Anne O'Byrne and Barbara Clayton who were seperated by three seconds.  Fastest times were recorded by Ken McLean (31:32) and Vicky Gunn (34:52).

Emma McClenaghan showed improved endurance to win the 4km from fastest female Alice Holmes (17:29) and Fergus Poynter.

Fastest male was Oscar Phillips in 13:33.

Arabella Phillips was first and fastest female in the 2km in a quick 8:31, from placegetters Eleanor McLean and Skye Baker.  Fastest male was Ben McShane in 8:23.

STOKELL PROPERTY ROSEVALE 29/5/2010

Saturday's Newstead Harrier Club events were held as sealed handicaps at the Stokell property at Rosevale.

Josh Stokell used his home course advantage well in the hilly and muddy 6km cross country race to claim handicap honours and also record fastest time of 24:14.  Handicap placegetters were Simon Phillips and Paul McShane. Fastest female was Kidist Ferguson in 33:11.

Alice Holmes was the 4km handicap winner in 18:26 and also fastest female from Fastest male Getasew Ferguson (15:57) and James Baker.

Skye Baker won the 2km on handicap and was also fastets female in 8:41, pipping Arabella Phillips by one second on actual time, with fastest male Ben McShane (8:23) third.

BEECHFORD 5/6/2010

Simon Phillips ran through the field from one of the backmarks to take the lead 500m from the finish at Saturday's Newstead Harrier Club cross country race at Beechford.

Phillips completed the tough 6km event held on soft sandy, beachside trails in 24:05 from Georgetown's Damon Sherriff, with Paul McShane third.

Fastest male was Oscar Phillips in 22:07 and fastest female Christine Rogers in 31:47.

Jayde Petterwood won the 3km in 13:59 from James Baker and fastest male Getasew Ferguson (11:39).  Fastest female was Alice Holmes in 14:04.

The 1.5km was won by Ryan Ferguson in 10:21 from Demi Petterwood and Orysia Petterwood.  Fastest male was Ben McShane in 7:27 and fastest female was Tayela Petterwood in 8:48.

ATHLETICS TAS LONG ROAD TITLES and TAS MASTERS TITLES 6/5/2010 

Newstead Harrier Club runners excelled at the AT and Masters Tasmanian Long Road Championships at Campbelltown on Sunday, taking home a swag of medals.  Alice Holmes won the U14 girls 4km title in a good time of 16:26 with Tayela Petterwood given bronze in the same event.  Ben McShane, 10, won silver in the U12 boys 3km and Arabella Phillips, 8, bronze in the U12 girls 3km.  The club's Masters runners were also successful with Vicky Gunn recording a fast 15:57 to win the W45 4km, Ros Holgate winning W65, Nye Evans M70 and Robert Gunn placing in M50 in the TMA title.   Getasew and Kidist Ferguson also performed well in the invitation walks events, winning their age categories.

Scotch Oakburn's Laura McShane won the primary school girls event at round 3 of the Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series at Queechy High School yesterday.
McShane recorded a time of 6:31 for the muddy 1.5km course, two seconds ahead of Norwood Primary's Arabella Phillips, with Scotch's Amy Halaby third.
Getasew Ferguson of Star of the Sea won the boys 1.5km in 5:50 from Oliver Marshall of Scotch and Hagley's Kaleb Canning.
The secondary school boys 3km saw an almost dead-heat between Scotch's Fergus Poynter and Ferguson who stepped up in age group to have a second run, both recording a time of 12:30.  Third was Grammar's Alex McLean.
Alice Holmes (Scotch) won the girls 3km in 13:40 from Tayela Petterwood (Grammar) and Kidist Ferguson (Star of the Sea).
The 59th annual Ken O'Toole Memorial 10km road race was held as a sealed handicap in conjunction with the cross country events.  
Handicap winner was fastest female Barbara-Anne O'Byrne with a time of 48:07, from fastest male Robert Lee, with Peter Vocke third.

STEPHENSDALE - TREVALLYN 26/6/2010

With the cross country season now half way through, interest is building in the Newstead Harrier Club consistency points, with little seperating the division leaders.
Craig Barron and Paul McShane are tied for first in Div. 1 with Barbara Clayton, Barbara-Anne O'Byrne and Steve Elton rounding out the top 5.  Div. 2 is led by Getasew Ferguson by one point from Fergus Poynter, ahead of Alice Holmes, Tayela Pettwerwood and James Baker. Skye Baker leads Div. 3 from Ben and Tom McShane, Arabella Phillips and Jessica Walsh.
Simon Phillips won the 6km sealed handicap on a tough cross country course at the Stephensdale property, from Barbara Anne O'Byrne and Paul McShane.
In the Country Club Tasmania schools competition, Getasew Ferguson won the boys secondary 3km from Fergus Poynter (Scotch) and Josh McDonald (Prospect) and Alice Holmes the girls 3km from Tayela Petterwood (Grammar) and Kidist Ferguson (Star of the Sea).
Ferguson also won the 1.5km from Hagley pair Thomas Baker and Kaleb Canning and Scotch's Laura McShane won the girls 1.5km from Skye Baker (Hagley) and Amy Halaby (Scotch).   

DIDDLEUM 3/7/2010

Barbara Clayton showed continued improvement to win the 9km cross country race at the Newstead Harrier Club's Kings Meadows Podiatry sponsored events at Diddleum on Saturday.  It was the second win of the season for Clayton with Robbie Lee second and Paul McShane third.  Backmarker Getasew Ferguson caught Tayela Petterwood on the line to win the 4.5km with Alice Holmes third and Skye Baker won the 2.5km from Jayde Petterwood and Ben McShane.

Thank you to the McClenaghan family for the work they put into this day, and for providing a great cross country venue.

STEPHENSDALE/TREVALLYN 2 17/7/2010

Barabara-Anne O/Byrne won the club's 4.75km road event at Trevallyn from Christine Rogers and Craig Barron.  A short low key eventin conjunction with the schools series was held due to the next day's fun run.   Scotch's Alice Holmes won the girl's secondary 3km and Josh McDonald of Prospect the boys event.  Skye Baker won the primary girls 1.5km from Amy Halaby and Arabella Phillips and Thomas Baker won the boys 1.5km from Ben McShane and Oliver Marshall.

CLARENDON 24/7/2010

Saturday's Newstead Harrier Club events were held on road and as sealed handicaps.  Steve Elton took out the 8km from Christine Rogers and Craig Barron.  Fastest male was Charles Gunn and fastest female Barbara-Anne O'Byrne.  Alice Holmes won the 4km from Tayela Petterwood and Ros Holgate and Jessica Walsh the 2km ahead of Ben McShane and Skye Baker.

CLAYTON'S, ROSEVALE 7/8/10

In his first run with the club, Adam Dowsett won the Newstead Harrier club's hilly and muddy 8.3km cross country at the Clayton property at  Rosevale on Saturday.  Second was another new runner, Mark White.  Teenage backmarker Oscar Phillips who returned home on Thursday after two months overseas shrugged off the effects of jet-lag to take third in the fastest time of 32:23.  Fastest female was Sandy Bay's Mandy Giblin in 37:31. The 4km was won by Fergus Poynter, from fastest male Getasew Ferguson (16:21) with Susan McClenaghan third.  Fastest female was Alice Holmes (21:06).  Tom McShane held out Arabella Phillips by a second to win the 2km, with fastest male Ben McShane (8:52) third.  Fastest female was Skye Baker in 9:02.

HERTAGE FOREST 14/8/2010

Scotch Oakburn has made a clean sweep of the Newstead Harrier Club's Country Club Tasmania schools cross country series, winning three awards at the final round of the event at Heritage Forest on Saturday.

Scotch juniors relegated  last year's winners Hagley to second place in the primary school shield.  Norwood finished in third place.  Scotch juniors also won the Newstead Harrier Club participation shield for performances at the Northern All Schools championships.  Scotch senior school won the secondary school's trophy ahead of Launceston Church Grammar with Star of the Sea third. 

Several state cross country team members used the series as preparation for this weekend's Australian cross country championships in Brisbane.  Before heading off for her first state representative role, Hagley's Skye Baker, 10, won the U11 girl's series from Scotch's Amy Halaby and Norwood's Arabella Phillips.  Oliver Marshall (Scotch) who will also make his state debut this weekend, took out the boy's U11 division with Hagley's Jock Heazlewood-Snell and Ben McShane the placegetters.  In the U13 girl's category, Jade Curran of Hagley won from team mate Breanna Stokell and Scotch's Annabelle Jones.  Hagley's Thomas Baker won the U13 boy's series from Scotch's Angus Brown and Dylan Johnson (Hagley).

Eleanor White (Scotch) was first in a combined U7-U9 girl's competition, ahead of Demi Petterwood (St Thomas More's) and Kate Harris (Hagley) and in the boy's U7-U9 Hagley's Tom McShane won from Scotch Oakburn's Ben Marshall and Oliver Gibson.

Grammar's Tayela Petterwood won the girl's U15 series from Alice Holmes (Scotch) and in the boy's U15 event Getasew Ferguson (Star of the Sea) narrowly won from Prospect's Josh McDonald.  In the U17-20 category, winners were Kidist Ferguson (Star of the Sea) and  Fergus Poynter (Scotch).   

In Saturday's final round Getasew Ferguson won both the 3km and the 1.5km races - the 3km from Josh McDonald and Grant Docking and the 1.5km ahead of Thomas Baker and state representative Kaleb Canning.  Skye Baker won the primary girl's 1.5km by 8 seconds from Amy Halaby, with Arabella Phillips one second behind in third.  Tayela Petterwood won the secondary girls 3km with Kidist Ferguson and Alice Fullerton the placegetters.

The open 6km, held in conjunction with the series was won by Paul McShane, with Craig Barron second and Barbara Clayton third.  

MT BARROW  28/8/2010

Runners were greeted with a snow covered road as they approached the summit of Mt Barrow on Saturday in the annual Ewan Scott Memorial road race.

Robert Lee was first across the line and also won the sealed handicap, from Malcolm Hales and Craig Barron.

The tough 14km event is a favourite for Lee who prepares with a series of city street hill climbs. 

Handicap winners of the supporting events were Barbara Clayton (10km), and state cross country representatives Getasew Ferguson (4.5km) and Skye Baker (1.6km).
